Meet the Master Perfumer behind Caspian Cherry: Kévin Mathys
Join us as we sit down with Master Perfumer, Kévin Mathys to discuss his passion for scent and his latest Electimuss London creation, Caspian Cherry. |
Before diving into the fragrance, let’s start at the beginning. Where did your love of fragrance begin?
My love of fragrance started when I was a child, I’d always been attracted to scents. When I was younger I remember blending colognes (the results were awful, trust me haha). I’ve always loved it and it set me on the path to becoming a perfumer.
And can you pinpoint the moment you knew you wanted to be a perfumer?
Growing up, I always had a passion for chemistry. For a while, I wanted to work as a chemist for the cosmetic industry, until I discovered that being a perfumer could be a career. I started to learn about ingredients and perfumery. As a student I started to create my own blend with essential oils and different notes until I finally managed to get a position as a trainee perfumer.
Let’s dive into your latest launch with Electimuss London, Caspian Cherry…
Caspian Cherry is your second Electimuss London fragrance, alongside Patchouli of the Underworld. What do you enjoy most about working with Electimuss London?
What I love about working with Electimuss is their commitment to luxury and their thirst for bold, complex compositions.
When you began creating Caspian Cherry, did you envisage the scent journey you were going to take?
When envisaging this scent journey, I envisioned a decadent dessert from a Roman banquet. I started to create a composition revolving around cherry that I faceted with a black chocolate aroma-space and a touch of coffee. Honey and cinnamon were used to represent treats and spiced red wine which were used back then at the antique banquets. I then counterbalanced the sweetness with the earthy notes of patchouli and sandalwood creating a grounded, sophisticated base.
When creating this fragrance, which ingredient did you turn to first?
The first ingredient I turned to was cherries as they are linked to the idea of prosperity, luxury and pleasure but I knew then that I wanted to give a little twist to it. To create something unexpected, I chose amaretto liquor which is a bitter almond with some caramel and sugary notes. This paired very beautifully with the cherry and of course, compliments the coffee and cinnamon that sit at the heart of this composition.
It sounds delicious. If you were to close your eyes, where does Caspian Cherry transport you?
I’m instantly transported to an imaginary Eden where you can love and experience joy without any bounds.
What emotions does Caspian Cherry evoke and why?
Caspian Cherry represents opulence and indulgence, so I believe it evokes passion and desire in anybody who smells it.
When and where would somebody wear Caspian Cherry?
I see it worn on an autumnal evening when you want to be warm and cosy. You could wear it with friends or with your lover whenever you want to feel desired and passionate.
If you were to describe this fragrance in three words what would they be?
They would be hedonistic, sumptuous and passionate.
And lastly, if Caspian Cherry was a song or genre of music, what would it be?
For me, it would be a jazz composition. Jazz is all about elegance and sophistication. It brings a sense of indulgence. It’s a music that blends various rhythms together, the same way Caspian Cherry combines gourmand with fruity, warm and earthy notes which I believe fit together perfectly.
Caspian Cherry launches as part of our Explorer Collection and is ready to transport you on your own journey.
